State Auditor Glen B. Gainer III speaks to students at the 72nd American Legion Mountaineer Boys State
(CHARLESTON) --- State Auditor Glen B. Gainer III will discuss the elements of good
citizenship Thursday evening when he speaks to students attending the 72nd American
Legion Mountaineer Boys State at WVU Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp.
This is the 17th year that Boys State officials have invited Auditor Gainer to speak to the
elite group of high school males chosen to participate. His first address occurred when
Gainer was Auditor-Elect. He has missed just one Boys State gathering since then.
As Thursday’s dinner speaker, Gainer will advise teen leaders on the responsibilities of
living in a democracy.
“I’ll also tell them about two of my favorite statesmen – Thomas Jefferson and John
Quincy Adams,” Gainer said.
Gainer, first elected in 1992, serves as the state’s official bookkeeper, Chief Inspector and
Supervisor over Public Offices, Securities Commissioner and in other positions.
More than 300 students are attending this year’s 72nd event. It was just the second Boys
State to be established in the United States and has been rated as one of the best Boys
State programs.
The purpose of the week-long gathering is to teach the basic principles of democratic
government, from the town hall to the statehouse.
Historic Jackson’s Mill has offered learning, leadership and growth for West Virginians
for more than 85 years.
