Annual Training for Municipal Officials and Assistants
(FLATWOODS) --- More than 150 officials from 85 West Virginia local government
entities participated in financial workshops today aimed at streamlining the process of
budgeting, spending, recording and reporting tax dollars.
The State Auditor’s Annual Training for Municipal Officials and Assistants also focused
on a variety of other important topics, including ethics law, fraud prevention and
detection and financial accountability.
West Virginia State Auditor Glen B. Gainer III said he was happy that so many municipal
officials took advantage of the training.
“The training is critical for the employees who must face the issues of audits, budgeting
and ethics laws every day,” Gainer said.
Further, the legal requirements of these officials’ jobs sometimes can seem
overwhelming, said Ora Ash, director of local government services for the Auditor’s
Office.
Beyond helping officials navigate through complex laws, the seminar solidifies working
relationships between the Auditor’s Office and municipal officials, he said.
Jack Berry, director of the local government purchasing card program for the Auditor’s
Office, said 66 units of local and county government now use the card. Expenditures now
exceed $1 million a month.
Other speakers at the event, held at the Days Hotel Conference Center, included Lisa
Dooley, executive director of the West Virginia Municipal League; Theresa Kirk,
executive director of the West Virginia Ethics Commission; and Jim Terango, Joyce
Ferrebee and Dawna Skaggs, all of the Auditor’s Office.
