Military Saves
Military Saves Week was initiated by the Department of Defense in 2008 as
the component of America Saves Week for U. S. service members. The program
emphasizes the savings and investment opportunities made available to
servicemen and women. This year, Governor Manchin declared February 22nd to
March 1st, 2009 as Military Saves Week in the Mountain State.
The state Auditor's Office, Department of Military Affairs & Public Safety
and National Guard joined forces during Military Saves Week to distribute a
new publication entitled "Kiplinger-Better Business Bureau, Personal Finance
Guide for Military Families."
Major General Allen Tackett began his military service as a private in 1963.
General Tackett served for 25 years with the 16th Special Forces Group and
the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group ending his tour as the
Battalion Commander. Governor Gaston Caperton appointed General Tackett as
the Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard in September of
1995, and promoted him to the rank of Major General in October of 1996.
Recently General Tackett traveled to Bagram Afghanistan to visit members of
the West Virginia Army and Air National Guard serving together in a combat
area. Auditor Gainer and General Tackett discussed his trip, and the service
of the West Virginia National Guard.
