The West Virginia State Securities Commission is committed to protecting all West Virginia investors
from securities fraud. Investor education is a key component of our efforts and we sincerely
believe that an educated investor is a protected investor. The Basics of Saving and Investing:
Investor Education 2020 guide can be a tremendous resource in reaching out to investors with
the information they need to make wise investment decisions.
The Basics of Saving and Investing is a curriculum entirely focused on investor education and
protection. Based on our research of current financial curriculums, the focus on investing and the
inclusion of an entire unit on investor protection makes The Basics guide unique among the
national curriculums available today.
The Basics guide is divided into four units plus an Appendix. The unit titles are: Getting Started,
Introduction to Financial Markets, Making a Financial/Investment Plan, and Investment
Fraud. Each unit contains learning objectives, suggested activities, overheads, and handouts
and worksheets. The Appendix contains additional resources—including non-commercial
websites—and a glossary of terms.
The Basics of Saving and Investing guide is geared towards high school teachers, however its
content lends itself to all kinds of investor education and protection initiatives including college
courses, work place education, after school programs, seminars for adults and seniors, etc. The
Basics guide can be the framework of a course or seminar or supplement an existing education
program.
In addition to the print version of The Basics, a PDF version is available below. This document is large (7MB) and may take several minutes to download. The West Virginia State Securities Commission is always available to help you
obtain information, verify brokers and securities and schedule free investor education presentations
for the classroom.
